As of June 6, President Donald Trump has issued five pardons and two commutations. The list of controversial excused convictions include that of Joe Arpaio, the former sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona, who was convicted of contempt of court, and filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza, who was convicted of making illegal campaign finance contributions. More are said to be on the way.

Some argue that Trump is abusing his power and pardoning his friends, in a brazen display of what could eventually lead to the first time a president suspiciously pardons himself. Others see Trump’s latest moves as par for the course in any presidency, but note that with these particular pardons the president has rightfully focused on instances where private citizens may have been “made examples of” by federal prosecutors for political reasons.
